At the beginning of 1960 the construction of a spacious and modern hotel of the time was begun in the centre of Liepāja, at the place where the city council building was located before the war. The hotel opened its doors to the first visitors on 15 January 1966. At the time the hotel was very popular among high-ranking communist party officials, and the city residents could not stay at the hotel. After the restoration of state independence in 1991, the management of the hotel changed and for the next 9 years the hotel was a municipal enterprise. In 1999 the hotel was privatised by JSC “Līvas viesnīca”. Without interrupting the operation of the hotel, its reconstruction was begun in 2000. It is proud to provide 115 rooms and is still the largest hotel in Liepāja, as well as one of the largest in Kurzeme. During its more than 50 years of existence “Līva” has become a symbol by which the city is recognised, retaining its outstanding tradition of hospitality. The name of the hotel is a reminder of the ancient fishing village that existed here eight hundred years ago. Also, the name of the restaurant “Upe” (River) was chosen to create associations with the ancient Līva Village on the bank of the River Līva.
